You might want to go over to the very excellent article on the
Archdaily site, re the way a guy called Brandon Liu, a Software Developer from San Francisco has used data from
OpenStreetMap to create .DXF
CAD files of 241 major cities worldwide. These files are
entirely free to download, and from
San Francisco to
Sydney,
Buenos Aires to
Beijing and
Helsinki to
Harare, most of the world’s major cities are included.
The file is downloaded as a
DXF file and as such is easily imported into any major CAD package, I choose the Birmingham area and easily imported it into my copy of
Autocad 2013 as always when importing into other CAD programs, the unit of import is meter to millimetre.
The import shows roads as single lines, although the actual map on the site has the roads marked out, minus the pavements, but its easy to navigate and find your area,
I can think of several ways to use these maps, but will they replace the accuracy and content level of the UK OS maps, I think not yet, but the Openstreet map site is well worth visiting again the level of information is not yet OS map level, but its getting close.
I would like to take a look at the backend of the map, the girding and the way you contribute,.
